In the book “Bad Boy”, Chapter 1 talks about Walter and where he was born. Right after Walter was born his mother passed away. His father George Myers got married with another woman named Florence Dean. She later got in a divorce and married a man named Herbert Dean. His step father Hebert worked for a gangster that owned a moving company named Dutch Schultz.
This improved his grades and teachers noticed his intelligence. He was put into all of the smarter classes, which was rare for African Americans at this time. Walter continued for his affection for reading, but he discovered that he had a skill in writing as well. He began writing poems and short stories about his life, neighbors, books or basically anything. As Walter reached middle school, he met his birth family, including his father and his brother Mickey.
In the book, He gives us information about his family members,and school problems He says in the book, “ I do not know who my mother was, but I know that she died when I was only a toddler. ”He tells the readers that he is adopted by this father’s first marriage,her name is Florence Brown Dean. Walter tells the readers that his adopted mother’s family, whom was white, did not like her married to a black man. During this time they were still going through segregation. Walter grew up with 3 siblings in one little apartment.
