Walter Dean Myers, author of several children's books throughout his life, was born on August 12th, 1937, in Martinsburg, West Virginia (Walterdeanmyers.net). At age two, his mother passed away and he was given to a family in the neighborhood of Harlem. Florence Myers, a friend of Walter's mom, and her husband Herbert Myers raised and cared for Walter (Notablebiographies.com). It took time, but Walter eventually came to love where he was and who he was with. His love for books grew every time his mother would read him a story, which resulted in him falling in love with writing. His teachers at Stuyvesant High School noticed this and advised him to turn it into a career (Walterdeanmyers.net). Although Walter ended up dropping out and joining the army at seventeen, there was nothing else that could get him through harder times like writing and that is why he stuck to it even in his post-war days. Walter Dean Myers goes into detail illustrating Muhammad Ali’s growth and how the world around him influenced his boxing career and beliefs. This book also analyzes Ali’s decisions throughout his life and tells about the actions Ali took to better the people and community around him. In my opinion, this story is very interesting and really gives a good glimpse at the world through the eyes of Ali. It also does a good job at highlighting some of the most memorable moments throughout that time period and how they all impacted Ali’s career. I really enjoyed reading this book because us readers get to relive these moments as if they were happening right before us. That being said, I would recommend this book to readers who like to learn about the lives of others and to readers who want to get to know Muhammad Ali as a person. Overall, this book is a great account of one of the greatest boxers to ever step into the
