Walter Mitty is a courageous man inside a cowardly body. This conflict between himself is first introduced when he returns from his daydream of commanding the SN202 into the eye of a hurricane and returns to his wife, Mrs. Mitty. During this very courageous daydream, Commander Mitty yelled to his crew, “Throw on the power lights! Rev her up to 8,500! We’re going through!” The mission was completely insane, impossible in the real world, but Mr. Mitty was fearless going through the life-threatening storm. Though the crew was frightened, they did not hesitate to obey The Commander’s orders. Mitty being on trial for murder. The District Attorney asked Mr. Mitty if he could identify an object, pushing a handgun on the witness stand. “This is my Webley-Vickers 50.80”. It was no secret that Mr. Mitty was not trying to hide anything due to his full commitment when answering the questions. Mitty’s attorney clearly proved that it was impossible for their client, Mr. Mitty, to have shot the man because he wore a right arm sling the night of the murder. The case took a turn of events when Mr. Mitty exclaimed “I could have killed Gregory Fitzhurst at three hundred feet with my left hand.” As with any comment such as this, the reaction of the courtroom was understandable; complete outrage. Mr. Mitty had a chance to live, to have a life outside of jail, but he chose to say a comment such as this to stay in the center of attention, to be remembered. A woman ran up to Mr. Mitty and sobbed into his arms. The District Attorney battered the women, so Mr. Mitty punched the man right on the chin. His daydream ended with the last words of “You miserable cur!” This comment then made him come back to reality, remembering one of the errands Mrs. Mitty wanted him to get: “Puppy biscuit”. Mitty’s hair appointment is almost done, and Mr. Mitty waits in the hotel lobby in a big leather chair facing the window. He picked up an old magazine of Liberty and started reading an article that read “Can Germany Conquer the World Through the Air?” From that, a new daydream took over his mind. He was a pilot, in the middle of a war who was going to bomb an ammunition dump. “It takes two men to handle that bomber and the Archies are pounding the hell out of the air.” The sergeant struggled to convince Captain Mitty to stand down, but for Mitty to be the hero of the story, he had to accomplish the impossible. Doing a two man job in the middle of a war where even then it is uncertain if you will survive or not. As the machine guns fired and the flamethrowers glowed in Mr. Mitty’s imagination, reality came into view by Mrs. Mitty pounding on his shoulder, yelling at him because she could not find him. As she mumbled on, Mr. Mitty clearly did not appreciate the overwhelming attention. “Did you get the what’s-its-name? The puppy biscuit? What’s in that box?” Just like the bullets fired from the machine guns and the flames shown from the flamethrowers, the continuous questions of Mrs. Mitty brought back the harsh reality of Mr. Mitty’s
