A poll published in 2014 found that only about half of Americans would consider themselves to be happy. This is a significant drop from even about 70 percent only 5 years earlier. Why aren’t people happy? Many claim that problems affecting happiness are money, career or family issues. But I believe it’s all relative. Think about families in third world countries. Many men have no career, no money, and significant family problems but find happiness in everyday life and appreciate what they have. It seems like people can get “stuck” in a loop of repetition. They remain in their comfort zone and can’t see the wonderful adventures the world has to offer. Stable? Yes. But happy? Not quite. All three of these movies are about people who feel trapped or stuck in a certain place in their lives where they survive and get by, but aren 't happy. After finding inspiration in either a person or an event, they decide to break out of their boxes and live their lives. In The Garden State a man suffering from depression meets a young free spirited girl who helps him to explore the world and open up to wonders that can be everyday life. In the movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, a young boy is the oldest of the family and is forced to be the stand-in parent for his mother who has health concerns and his brother who has mental disabilities. When a family of traveling campers breaks down in his home town, He gets close to them and he realizes he wants leave his home town and to see more of the world. At the end of the movie, he does just that. Finally, in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a single man working for Life magazine decides to visit the places he sees in those pictures, and to take action instead of daydream about what could
