“It’s time to start telling the truth, little brother. Do you understand what I’m saying?”(269). The truth, something that takes many people to reveal in a person. In the story Tangerine, by: Edward Bloor, The truth takes a family and set of friends to help Erik Fisher, Arthur Bauer, and Paul Fisher to reveal the truth about themselves and each other, like shapes. Shapes reveal each other’s flaws and imperfections.
Both of the characters in their adjacent stories have a very prominent hazard in their experience. During Greg Ridley’s short encounter with Lemon Brown, a group of street thugs overhear them talking about a treasure, and had continued to engage them in the deserted building they were located in. As written in the story, “Greg went to the window and saw three men, neighborhood thugs, on the stoop. One was carrying the length of a pipe. Greg looked back toward Lemon Brown,who moved quietly across the room to the window.’
Greg met someone named Lemon Brown, and Lemon Brown adored his treasure’s. Later on in the story, it introduces the thugs, these thugs were horrible people. All Greg wanted to do was play basketball and not worry about school. His father disagreed with his wishes. Greg’s father wanted him to stay in school and get good grades.
In the book I read SLAM! By Walter Dean Myers at the beginning of the chapter. The dad was mad because Greg has a tutor now and the dad doesn’t think the son need a tutor. Also the dad is mad at Greg because he knows that Greg can do the work but Greg doesn’t make it palatable with his mind he wants to be stubborn and joke off in class and is lazy with his school work. Then when school was over Greg went down to 135th street to talk to Ice Mtisha’s cousin about them being friends again.
This affects Greg emotionally after the fight, as his father does not accept him; thus causing Greg to believe he has failed his father since he follows his dreams and not anybody else's. Greg’s sister, Sharlene, also struggles throughout her discovery of what she wants in life. Sharlene develops an understanding through her brother’s exploration of his life. In the book The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, Moore talks about his life experiences and the experiences of another man who is also named Wes Moore. The author states, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his,” is true up to the extent in which they had different support systems involving family and friends (Wes xi).
