Throughout the novel, Wang Lung and his family attained much fortune, almost completely attributed to the use and respect of the earth. When Wang Lung would tend to the land, almost every time he achieved immense wealth, which therefore allowed him to provide his family with a comfortable upbringing. However, whenever he neglected the land, he experienced times of suffrage and bad fortune. This relationship with the land was very important to the Lung family, so Wang Lung tried to convey the ideals down to his sons.
