The act of racism has been present in every society throughout history. Discrimination of other groups based on their different descent and ethnicity. These forms of hatred and negativity are based off old fashion values and traditions. People of different cultures believe there’s is superior, this belief in superiority may take the form of ethnocentrism or prejudice. In early Vancouver, the Chinese and First Nations experienced this disparagement first hand.
Li Xiu Ying was the few survivors during the cause of Nanking Massacre on December 1937. She was stabbed 37 times, and miraculously survived, becoming the most powerful witness of that tragic history. Li Xiu Ying has been using her personal experience to expose the atrocities of those Japanese invaders. She was 19 years old and seven month pregnant when the attack happened, causing her to not be able to flee, so she together with her father hid in the Nanking International Safety Zone which is under the Mountain Elementary School. But the Japanese Soldiers broke in and attempts to rape her, and while fighting back, she was stabbed, and after those soldier left, her father managed to send her to the Nanking Golou Hospital.
Amadou Hampaté Bâ is extremely detailed throughout the book, The Fortunes of Wangrin, in explaining the colonial world in West African societies. He provides multiple examples in this work of fiction that precisely describe the factual aspects of African colonialism that we have discussed in class. I will point out a few of the examples that Bâ uses such as: limitations colonial governments set on Africans, the Métis relationships within colonies, and issues that arose, not only between Europeans and Africans, but within the native African communities as well. I will then point out certain details from the book that do not perfectly reflect the components of colonialism that we have studied in lecture.
The Good Earth In the early 1900s, China could be a setting where one prospers, or a place where one is poor and living on the streets with no food. If people are willing to work diligently enough to have a successful life even under difficult conditions, they can succeed. In The Good Earth, the protagonist, Wang Lung, has to put up with arduous situations. Although Lung has to deal with these situations, he demonstrates his work ethic, which is one of his many virtues.

He was described as a “true Renais-sance man.” He designed a cart based on the big dipper, designed a sequence of musical notes to be able to read and create music tones, but his great passion was medicine. Huang Ti is supposed to have been born about 2704 BC and ruled as emperor around 2697. His mythological independence is credited with the introduction of “wood-en houses, carts, boats, the bow and arrow, and writing.”

The story of Hangzhou by Lan Samantha Chang is about a thirty four year old woman named Chanyi who decides to take a trip with her two young daughters across the West Lake. To Hangzhou it was describe as one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the capitol of China. “The city was built around a lake deep and serene, a city of holy places marked with palaces and temples.” (Pg.166) This woman takes herself and her two daughters across the lake to see a fortune teller.

Wu Zhao Wu Zhao was a good leader for all people in Ancient China Wu Zhao was the first ever female to become an Emperor in ancient china. She was born on the 17th of February 624 AD and grew up in a very wealthy family and being well educated by her father. By the time she was 14 she moved into a imperial palace to help serve emperor Taizong as a concubine. Wu Zhao continued to be educated while living at the imperial palace, learning languages and English, which certainly gave her the background knowledge and skills to be a good Emperor. While some believe she manipulated her way to power, Wu Zhao was a good leader for all people in ancient china as she set a positive example for others, particularly women, and introduced many improvements which made the lives of those under her leadership better.
Hard work on the land is rewarded with wealth and prosperity. This is a belief of Wang Lung, the main character in The Good Earth. The book is set in turn-of-the-century China, in a rural farming town with few amenities of the revolutionized world. It follows his path from the moment he’s married to his death, with all the highs and lows in his life. It takes specific care to highlight the culture in China and how it affects the characters.
Qin Shi Huang-Di, during his short reign as the first emperor of China, unified and reformed the country, built the great wall and countless other things, including a gigantic tomb famously known for its terracotta army. Of course, while he was effective, he was also cruel, oppressive, and paranoid, getting rid of anyone who disagreed with him.
