War Is Futile War is blood, gore, killing, and sadness. During the book, My Brother Sam Is Dead the authors Collier and Collier hint that war is horrendous. For example Colonel Read said,”War isn't fair”(Collier and Collier 200). This quote shows that you don’t get to choose who dies and who doesn’t. Also, war makes it harder on everyone involved. For example colonel Read said,” Be brave and help your mother bear up she needs somebody now” (Collier and Collier 200). This shows that you get torn apart and depressed during war. The authors Collier and Collier's viewpoint on war is futile. One way the authors argue against war is the Meeker family is torn apart. The Meekers go through hard times as the book progresses. The only problems that they have come from the war. Before the war they were a happy family. During the war father and Sam die. For example,” They had shot him so close that his clothes were on fire. He went on jerking with flames on his chest until another soldier shot him dead” (Collier and Collier 208). Tim had to witness his family member get shot right in front of him. During the book Mr Meeker and sam get into a huge argument. Sam wants to join the war but his father won’t let him. In their argument Sam says,” Father you don't understand, if they won’t let us be free we have to fight” (Collier and Collier 7). This shows that the younger generation and older generation are disagreeing and getting into arguments. Next, the Yale students ditch school to join the army. The younger generation are going to war against all the older men. Finally, the last example is when Mr. Beach argues with Sam. Mr. Beach backs up Mr.Meeker by saying,” Answer me this Sam- do you really think you know better than the king?” (Collier and Collier 8).
