The United States, as a world power today, has inevitably been involved in many wars in the course of its development. From the Revolutionary War to the conflicts of the 21st century, Americans have been involved in wars for a variety of motivations, but all have followed certain principles. Culturally, it is for democracy; politically, it is for national defense; and economically, it is for the interests. Since the foundation of the United States, Americans have made great efforts to protect their democracy. For instance, the War of 1812 was a war to protect the sovereignty of the nation. (Doc C) It was a war between the United States and the old colonial ruler, Great Britain, largely due to the suppression of American sailors by the British Navy and restrictions on trade. The war lasted three years and ended in a draw. Although the British disdained the war, the Americans view it as a victory in defense of national sovereignty. Paradoxically, the War of 1812 was a fight that the United States was forced to counter, whereas the Mexican-American War was more of an invasion of Mexico by the United States. (Doc D) The main cause of the conflict was a territorial dispute between the United States and Mexico. After the annexation of Texas, the two sides fought over the demarcation line, which ended with the United States acquiring half of Mexico's territory and a monetary settlement. The purpose of the war, while partly to defend American territory, was primarily to obtain more profit. It took place in the middle of the 19th century, and the idea of Manifest Destiny gripped almost every American, who believed in the divine right to expand the frontier ever further. Therefore, the Americans strongly supported the Cubans and the Filipinos in the war, which ended with Cuban independence and the cession of other islands. In addition, after the Second Industrial Revolution, vehicles became the primary method of transportation for Americans, and the demand for oil became a primary goal for the United States. In 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait in an attempt to gain more control over oil, leading to the involvement of the United States. The impetus for American military involvement was undoubtedly the abundance of oil in the Middle East, which they would not allow Iraq to covet. Winning the war also served as a deterrent to remind other nations of America's global position. Similarly, the war between the United States and Iraq is also about oil.
