Is the United States making progress on the war on drugs?

The United States has been at war with drugs for a long time. Drugs in the United States first came apparent in the 1800’s. Nixon was the first president to start the “war on drugs”. However, we still struggle with drug problems today. The United States is progressing by legalizing medical marijuana and has been progressing with the little laws it makes along the way, however with all of the people in jail for minor drug crimes and billions of dollars still used today to try to eradicate drugs rather then towards treatment programs, the U.S. has a long way to go to win this war. He proclaimed drugs America’s number one public enemy in 1971. He increased the size of Drug control agencies, closed borders, and placed marijuana as a schedule one drug. None of these efforts seemed to work. Within a few years eleven states decriminalized marijuana, when Mexico’s borders were shut down and all trade was cut off Columbia quickly stepped in and became the U.S. marijuana supplier. This is when the united States really came to realize that this drug problem was international and that if you close one border it can come in a different way- through air, boat, or just right across land people are willing to do anything, including risk their lives to get the payoff and when the demand is high the payoff is high. Regulating the marijuana industry would make people pay taxes on it, which would help our economy. There are now seven states that have legal recreational marijuana usage, they are all thriving from the money. According to Denver post money from marijuana sales are helping communities address homeless, fund projects, and make road improvements, Aurora is using $1.5 million from sales to address these
