Over the course of time, does history repeat itself? According to the events that took place in 1692 in Salem, and the events taking place now due to the events on 9/11, this may be true. The search for Al-Qaeda is absolutely a modern day witch hunt. The Crucible and the War On Terror took innocent lives and are driven by fear. The main cause for both these tragic events is fear. Many innocent lives were lost in vain. Both of these events were very much escalated due to fear, hysteria, and lies.

In The Crucible the courts had found suspects guilty without any real proof of witchcraft. Today, these suspected terrorists are no different than the people that were found guilty in The Crucible. Since September 11th, Republican candidates have been using fear to gain voters (Heer). In order to gain voters for his reelection, President Bush in his State of the Union Address used the scare tactic to pit us against the Islamic people. With America still in a sensitive state, the President needed a scapegoat. In order to create an enemy, Bush scared citizens by pushing the truth. Just like the girls in the Crucible, both use fear to make enemies. In the Crucible, the girls exaggerate and lie in order to get rid of people in salem by claiming they are witches.
