The History of Telephones
A call to the past
On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham bell spoke into his creation and said to his assistant, "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you." Why did he want to see Mr. Watson? Was Bell the real inventor of the telephone? What's a telephone?
None of that matters, at least not in this essay. Believe it or not, people used to talk on phones -hince calling them "phones"- and that fact alone influenced the design choices telephones had over the years. So let's go over the fascinating amazing history of the telephone:
Candle stick
Selling like hot cakes in 1890s, the candlestick phone was a stale vanilla cake in the early 1930s. It's a time where people weren't dazzled by functionality alone, devices

Even though it appropriate a technologies used in WWII, these machines were subject to what we call today hacking by a device called "blue box". Allowing the "hacker" to make free long distance phone calls.
Design: the main consumer for phones at the time were offices, and since keeping a constant flow of work was a vital goal, the push button was inspired by the mesin keyboard.
Portable phones
In 1980s kids in their twenties weren't kids anymore, they didn't have the time to dance around tangled phone cords, and much like phones at that time kids weren't physically attached to their phone stations anymore. But that phone wasn't fully independent, for it had to go back to the base station once the battery needed charging.
Design: Since these phones used radio signals instead of cords, the antenna was implemented to the design of the phone, allowing for free house roaming as long as the phone is in the base station proximity area.
Motorola

And none of that mattered because it did so many rights, it was rugged (just look at the Internet memes) it had a long battery life, and most importantly it had Snake on it. Snake became a worldwide phenomena, championships and world records were spawned with every snake respawn. Every kid wanted a phone just to play snake, and thus gaming on mobile phones was born.
Design: Keeping the end consumer in mind, the 5110 introduced the idea of colourful phones, whether it's in the ringtone or aesthetics, every phone was uniquly tailored for it's own user, the customization options were unheard of at the time, phones are finally fun.
Motorola StarTAC
At a time where wall street was booming witch young ambitious businessmen, deals were struck on the phone, everyone was on the move therefore portability and pocketability were on high demand. Motorola introduced it's solution in 1996, StarTAC had an innovative clamshell design, and being the big success it was, the StarTAC was humanitys big leap toward the trend of smaller more portable
