Was Henry Fleming Honorable

What made Henry Fleming a true honorable man? The story in The Red Badge of Courage had many themes that stood out to me. Most of these themes were portrayed by the main character Henry Fleming. One obvious theme of this story was Courage which arguably could have been foreshadowed in its title. Henry’s personality immediately portrays this asset with his compassion and being a “romantic”. When using the term “romantic” it reflects a meaning of realism and seeing the brighter side to war. Henry entering the war from his perspective on Greek Heroism and Homer’s writings which gave him false hopes. Quickly Henry learned it was not what he thought it was prior to enlisting into war. Henry had a different approach to understanding the true meaning of courage. Personification of things such as the Flags, wounds and even the color red were constantly exemplified throughout the text to its readers. Manhood isn’t a very common or easy theme to show in a story especially today. Back in the time of the civil war a lot of young men had to grow up very fast and prepare to become men and soldiers. The time was short to make this quick progression but Henry did for sure. Henry had been described as a young innocent boy hence the nickname Youth. Then he goes through the typical teen rebellious years where he doesn’t care about education and religion and defies typical law. As Henry grows and the story continues you see the maturation and growth into adulthood. Henry was a prime example of what hundreds of thousands of teenagers that had to prepare for or in combat to survive.
