John Brown killed half of an innocent family who did not own slaves because they were pro-slavery. John Brown was an abolitionist who killed many people. John Brown also committed treason. This topic is important because John Brown started the civil war, so it is important to know about him if he was a hero or villain. John Brown was a villain because he killed innocent people, he committed treason, and he was very untrustworthy.
“John Brown was known as a madman who used excessive force in order to achieve his goals” says Joseph R. Gilmore, but who was John Brown? John Brown was an abolitionist trying to free slaves, except he did that with so much violence and killing innocent people. It was also later revealed that those weren’t even his true intentions. This information is very important since most people think that he was an amazing person who just wanted to free slaves, but that was not the whole truth. John Brown was a villain because he killed innocent people and took them captive, he lied about everything in court, and he tried to start a civil war.
John Brown was a good man. He fought for what he believed in and he had good intentions. Brown did the things he did to help free slaves. John Brown was not a terrorist. He was a freedom fighter.
John Brown: Hero or Terrorist? John Brown was raised by a devote Calvinist who taught all his children that slavery was a sin. During the War of 1812 Brown’s father won a contract to provide beef to American forces. He entrusted his son to drive the cattle to the armies’ outpost.
The second reason, John Brown led a revolt. “These men are all talk, what we need is action, action!” John Brown said before He and his men (in October 16, 1859) raided the Federal Arsenal armory, and as a result, shook the south. Upon hearing he was going to be hung he stated: “…if it is deemed necessary that I should forfeit my life for the furtherance of the ends of justice, and mingle my blood further with the blood of my children and with the blood of millions in this slave country whose rights are disregarded by wicked, cruel, and unjust enactments--I submit; so let it be done!”
John Brown was a man with a strong hatred for slavery who tried to lead a rebellion against it. After this he was called a “misguided fanatic” by Abraham Lincoln. Which leaves the question, was John Brown a “misguided fanatic”? I think John Brown was a misguided fanatic, or according to dictionary.com a, mistaken person with an extreme, uncritical enthusiasm, because he was so set in his rebellion that his mind couldn’t be changed even when told his plan wouldn’t go well, and although he was told his actions would be fatal he went on to do so . In The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, Douglass states that there was no changing Brown
He was willing to die to make something happen, he went with a few men to conquer an armory, although he was not aware of the fact the probability of death was way higher than he thought because of his insanity, but he still knew that there was chance of death. The South thought John Brown was a terrorist. They state that he was evil for murdering a lot of citizens because some of them may have not treated their slaves that bad, and it is just plain evil to kill for no reason. This is not true.
John Brown was a murderer who shot three innocent family members. “...entered my house at midnight and arrested my husband and two boys and took them out of the yard and in cold blood shot them dead in my hearing, you can’t say you did it to free our slaves, we had none and never expected to own one...” (Mahala Doyle Document E). John Brown mentions in his speech during his trial that his ultimate goal was to abolish slavery without violence. However, the murder of three men with no interest in slaves does not fit that plan.
John Brown dissented slavery and thought to be God’s chosen weapon to fight it. He slaughtered innocent people, only to try to ‘save’ slaves who did not wish to join his rebellion. The court that held his case found him guilty of treason, murder, inciting a slave insurrection and sentenced him to death by hanging. Was it right for him to be sentenced to death? It indeed justified for him to be punished for all that he did.
Even up until the end, he was still a very strong believer that slavery was wrong. Even when he knew that he was going to die, that just shows how much his actions and this cause meant to him. we would never know that if his actions never happened, then slavery might still be in effect to this day. By doing everything in his power, he changed slavery for the generations to come. Some might say that John Brown was a villain because he killed tons of people and committed treason, but would slavery have ended if he didn’t?

Tried to start a rebellion with the government to stop slavery. That’s why I think he is a villain. Even though people depict John Brown as lunatic and insane he was a freedom fighter. Brown was raised into a deeply religious family and saw slavery as a sin of the nation. After witnessing slave women beaten to death by iron shovel at a young age and the death of Elijah Lovejoy by proslavery mob John Brown stood up and bowed to fight and end slavery. He believed he was appointed by god to end
John Brown, a freedom fighter, he fought for what he believed in. He was man of religion. He killed lots and freed lots. Brown’s actions were good but also bad. He thought this was what God made him for.
