John Brown killed many innocent people who did not own slaves. According to document E, on November 20th, 1859, Mahala Doyle expressed her anger towards John Brown. John Brown deliberately shot two of her sons and her husband because they were pro-slavery, even though they did not own slaves and weren’t ever going to own them. This shows that John Brown is a villain because he killed almost a whole family that did not own slaves, all because they were pro-slavery.
John Brown Hero or Villain The story of John Brown happened many years ago, yet it still puzzles historians today. John Brown was an anti-slave abolitionist who was put to death after pleading guilty of murder, but is he considered a hero or a villain? John Brown is a villain for three simple reason, he murdered many different people, he attacked a federal arsenal, and he could be considered a terrorist. The first reason John Brown is a villain is because he murdered many different people.
John Brown was an abolitionist who wanted to get rid of slavery in Kansas. When John Brown was 55, he moved to Kansas and played a role in “Bleeding Kansas”. Afterward, he was involved in other events like “The Sacking and Lawrence”, and “The Pottawatomie Massacre”, the last thing he was particularly a part of was the “Raid on Harpers Ferry”. This topic is important because John Brown has done many things for the cause of abolishing slavery. While some people think what he did was heroic, others may think he was a villain.
Brown used violence and treason to obtain slaves. in order to take property and murder people, he forcibly took the slaves hostage. “Took property, & two white men; & then sent the two White men back.” (Document A) “The other
According to document E, it says that the family he took three lives from didn’t own slaves, and were never planning to, they just lived in a pro-slavery area. Even Abraham Lincoln said he took it too far. Secondly, in court, he lied about everything he did. He lied about almost everything he did, claiming he never meant to hurt anyone or do anything to owners of slaves. He also ended up saying that his most brutal attack was “Without the snapping of a gun.”
Was he doing the right thing, or was he just a corrupt villain trying to get his way? John Brown was a villain because he killed innocent people, changed his intentions, and kept switching his stories. First off, John Brown killed innocent people. An example from the text is a letter from Mahala Doyle to John Brown. She was a married mother of two sons until Brown and
He even asked all of the victims about their opinions on slavery.
Not necessarily hurting, or abusing them. Just owning them. There is no real logical explanation for what he did other than simply his thinking wasn’t right. He led both his sons into battle, and his obvious obsession of ending slavery some think, made him go insane.
John Brown was a man with a strong hatred for slavery who tried to lead a rebellion against it. After this he was called a “misguided fanatic” by Abraham Lincoln. Which leaves the question, was John Brown a “misguided fanatic”? I think John Brown was a misguided fanatic, or according to dictionary.com a, mistaken person with an extreme, uncritical enthusiasm, because he was so set in his rebellion that his mind couldn’t be changed even when told his plan wouldn’t go well, and although he was told his actions would be fatal he went on to do so . In The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, Douglass states that there was no changing Brown
John Brown was a murderer who shot three innocent family members. “...entered my house at midnight and arrested my husband and two boys and took them out of the yard and in cold blood shot them dead in my hearing, you can’t say you did it to free our slaves, we had none and never expected to own one...” (Mahala Doyle Document E). John Brown mentions in his speech during his trial that his ultimate goal was to abolish slavery without violence. However, the murder of three men with no interest in slaves does not fit that plan.
This topic is important because we need to decide if we should celebrate this man and if his actions were worth it. John Brown was a villain because he killed many innocents, chose to commit treason from rebellion, and lied to court to lower or get rid of his sentence. He has killed 3 known innocent people in the massacre of Pottawatomie. In one of the letters addressed to John Brown written by Mahala Doyle, she stated that John Brown broke into their house, took both her husband and 2 sons into
Many people believed he was a hero, but many others believed he was a villain. John Brown murdered many innocent people, committed treason, and used violence. On May 24th, 1856, John Brown led an attack on a pro-slavery settlement at Pottawomie. He killed and tortured five
“I never intended murder or treason, or the destruction of property[...] or to make insurrection,” were the words of John Brown in 1859 before being sentenced to death. John Brown was a well-known abolitionist hoping to end slavery in the 1800s, using techniques many would deem brutal. However, he also had many allies willing to help him in any way to achieve his goal. There have been many debates on whether the strong-willed man should be considered a hero for trying to end slavery, or a criminal for using violent methods. John Brown was a villain because he was untrustworthy, his supporters disapproved of his actions, and his measures to end slavery were incredibly violent.
Lastly, we acknowledge the fact that he died to end slavery. John Brown raided Harpers Ferry, the home of the U.S. arsenal. His goal was to steal weapons from the arsenal to give to many slaves in hopes that they would revolt against their masters and other pro-slavery supporters. However, he and his followers were caught and later hanged for treason. With one speech at his trial and one letter sent after he was sentenced, John Brown didn’t try to escape or plead; he accepted his execution and died as a fierce martyr for all of the slaves and abolitionists (Documents F and G).
