Was Napoleon Justified In Animal Farm

440 Words2 Pages

Revolutions will fail because they result only in a change of tyrants. Just as Orwell said in his great allegory, Animal Farm. Napoleon, who portrays Stalin, turns into Mr. Jones when he gained more power. He takes over Animal Farm, after Old Major dies. The animals rebel against the humans and he proclaims that he will make Animal Farm a place where every animal is equal, they get to keep all the food they make, and all animals live in harmony. This was not the case though. The animals were worse off with Napoleon, then they ever were with Mr. Jones. This is a perfect example of Orwell’s philosophy. All the power made him want even more power. When this happened, Napoleon twisted all the principles Animal Farm was built on to justify his actions. He sent his puppies to kill anyone who was on Snowball’s side. He justified this action by adding on the rule that says, “No animal shall kill any other animal.” He added without cause to the end so that he wouldn’t get reprimanded for killing other animals. He also let his propagandist, Squealer, send Boxer to the glue factory so they could get money to buy beer. He changed the rule of “No animal shall drink liquor”, by adding “in excess” to the end so they were allowed to drink. Napoleon started acting just like Mr. Jones did. The pigs started turning into humans which conspired with Orwell’s philosophy. They were being exactly like the humans. They were walking on two legs and wearing clothes which they always said they wouldn’t. They gave the other animals even poorer rations then Mr. Jones did and they did not do any work to deserve it. They worked, played cards, and socialized with the humans. The humans were so impressed that the pigs could get the other animals to do exactly what they wanted.
In conclusion, Orwell’s philosophy was completely right. The revolution did not change anything or anyone. The leader may have changed, but the ideas have stayed the same. The animals are still being treated with much disrespect, if not more than with Mr.
