Document B contains quotes from Freidrich Fabri’s “Does Germany Need Colonies?” and John Ruskin’s talk at Oxford University both propose that national competition provides partial fuel into African imperialism. A. In John Ruskin’s talk, he states, “This is what England must either do or perish: she must found colonies as fast and as far as possible.”
Imperialism, as an irrevocable phenomenon, facilitated the expansionism, conflicting interests, intense nationalism, and seething competition that enveloped the European continent at the beginning of the 20th century. Characteristic of the movement, imperialism fostered policies of colonial expansion and conquest, exemplified by the evidence of Source B. How could these documents be used to explain a driving force behind European imperialism in Africa? These document could be used to explain through a few of different things like technological advancements, African colonies and raw materials they had, and economic factors. These are three reasons to help explain the driving force behind European imperialism and also could answer questions that go along with the main question like why the Europeans imperialized Africa. Why did it have to be Africa at all? These are all questions and ways to explain the main question.
George Washington Williams, an African American legislator, and Kande Kamara, an African colonial subject, both experienced some of the most brutal products of European Imperialism. Williams, in the late nineteenth century, toured the Belgian controlled Congo and witnessed the harsh measures King Leopold implemented to maintain absolute control and bleed the country of its resources. Kamara, on the other hand, bore witness to the end result of overzealous imperial ambitions when he was forced to fight for the allies in the trenches of WWI. These two men’s experiences, although considerably different, both shed light on Europe’s colonial philosophy of racism and ethnic superiority and its position of immense power during this period.
Amadou Hampaté Bâ is extremely detailed throughout the book, The Fortunes of Wangrin, in explaining the colonial world in West African societies. He provides multiple examples in this work of fiction that precisely describe the factual aspects of African colonialism that we have discussed in class. I will point out a few of the examples that Bâ uses such as: limitations colonial governments set on Africans, the Métis relationships within colonies, and issues that arose, not only between Europeans and Africans, but within the native African communities as well. I will then point out certain details from the book that do not perfectly reflect the components of colonialism that we have studied in lecture.
Based on the documents provided, it can be argued that the Europeans were unwelcome and sparked a great disturbance among the African people during new imperialism period all across Africa based on the following perspectives from documents 4 and 9 which demonstrate brutal violence towards Africans, documents 6 and 7 which call for help to remove the presence of the Europeans, and documents 2 and 3 represent how these Africans state wish to avoid being under European power. Throughout the history of European colonization, there is evidence that the Europeans have disrupted and separated majority of the African continent. Everyone wanted to make their lives better. They thought by imperialising and taking control over African countries they will be able to make a civilised colony. They always underestimated Africans, believing that continent had a lower social standing than they did. “It would be wise if we Germans would learn about colonial skills from our Anglo-saxon [British] cousins and would begin in a friendly competition to strive after them.” says a German writer in Document B. The Germans viewed the British in higher “cultural appreciation.”
In document A, the Englishman is larger in size compared to Africa to show their superiority over Africa. In document B, Speech Before The French Chamber of Deputies, it states,” We must say openly that indeed the higher races have a right over the lower races... They have the duty to civilize the inferior races… .” This is saying that these colonizers thought of themselves as superior and Africans as an inferior race making them think that they can control the Africans into doing what they want. In document E it states,” The Boers then began to talk of their right to places I had lent them.”
From 1880 to 1925, an era deemed New immigration, vast numbers of foreigners sought better lives as Americans. However, rather than a welcoming embrace, the expanding populations of immigrants were confronted with growing disdain of immigration. Many Americans assumed immigrants came to America as the poorest and most vagrant people of their country. Thus, many worried that immigrants would pollute America’s genetic stock and become financial burdens to the country. In response to growing anti-immigrant sentiment, Nativists demanded that America belong to “natives” and advocated restrictions on immigration to keep jobs for real Americans.

Law, for me, is an essential element in maintaining a world of order and justice. The question of 'right or wrong?' arises in everyday life. To be involved in an aspect that essentially shapes the world we live in is a very exciting opportunity that I am passionate about. Law is used universally and is of great significance to how we conduct our behaviour and I find this particularly fascinating. I wish to pursue a degree in Law because it will allow me to fulfil my long term ambition of working in a legal environment.
