The greatly needed stability for the Holy Roman Empire motivated the political leaders for the undertaking of the Christian Crusades. At this time the Holy Roman Empire was a poverish and the majority of the people who were in the middle and lower class were not able to live comfortably. In addition the government was not strong enough to advance let alone support the people. The fairly new feudalist government created a separation within the classes the made the lower class serfs, Middle class knight and the upper class lords and kings fight for mobility and power. In result of this violence and chaos erupted.
The Crusades are several wars that went on between the Muslims and the Christians They fought for Jerusalem. Most of the wars took place in Jerusalem. Were the results of the Crusades more positive of negative? I think the results were more negative. One reason being the people that the Christians hired turned their backs on them.
To what extent was the First Crusade a catalyst for future Crusades? Preparations for the First Crusade was initiated by Pope Urban II in 1095. He gave a rousing speech to the people of Clermont calling the Christian arms to aid the Byzantine Christians in retaking the “holy land”. The Holy land was an area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, it was the shared holy land of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The famous Siege of Jerusalem was next on the crusaders agenda however Baldwin of Boulogne had other ideas, he left the crusaders and made “a naked claim to the land along the route” (Gregory, 2010, p. 327)
The Crusades started in 1095 when Pope Urban II wanted to take back Jerusalem. I think the results of the Crusades was more positive than negative than positive since people lost interest in them. Not only that, they killed and abused many innocents. One of the reasons the Crusades were more negative is because people lost interest in them.

In “Doc 4”, It states that “Moreover, the assault of one Christian people on another, when one of the goals of the Fourth Crusade was reunion of Greek and Latin churches, made the split between the Greek and Latin churches permanent.” The Crusades had a lot of hatred to the religions, and by 1204 the Crusaders had lost some of their appeal because the knights agreed to attack the Byzantine Capital instead.
The Crusades Even though, Crusader States in the Holy Land were unsustainable because of political instability. Long term problems were caused by Western presence in the Outremer1 and the political situation in Europe throughout the period. In Europe, the form of political dissension among the leaders of the various crusades caused everything to fall. They were many causes to the Crusades unsustainability like, ongoing tension between the Normans and the Byzantine Empire2 which culminated in the Norman defeat at Durazzo in 1107. The other main arguments include the lack of support for Jerusalem, as well as the lack of manpower, the debatable lack of strong leadership, and to a certain extent the arrogance of the Crusaders.

The first of the crusades began in 1095 when the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, Alexios I, sent someone to request Pope Urban II to assist them with military support against the Turks. Pope Urban II quickly asked Catholic soldiers to join the first crusade. The first goal was to give the pilgrims access to areas in the Holy Land that Muslims were controlling. A more long-term goal would be to have the Eastern and Western parts of Christendom reunite.

The Crusades were successful failures because they did not meet many of their goals, but left lasting effects. The Crusades was an attempt by the Roman Catholic Church to regain the Holy Lands from the Muslims. They believed they were fighting for god and all sins would be forgiven and defend the Byzantine Empire from the Turks. The first Crusade (1096 -1099) was successful for the Christians because they had a clear and organized religious based purpose. Crusaders the Christian armies were able to hold Jerusalem and in the process led to a massacre of Jews.
Through the 11th and 13th, the Seljuk Turks have invaded the Byzantine Empire where they converted into Islam. The Turks have expanded their power from Palestine to Jerusalem, the Christian holy land, where they attacked Christian pilgrims. This led to the Byzantine Empire joining forces with Christians to fight against the Turks. Pope Urban II called for a Crusade, persuading the Christians to fight for God and the holy lands where those who fought will be forgiven for their sins. Some historians have referred to the Crusades as one of "history's most successful failure."
