The Harlem Hellfighters; Book Report Was the Harlem Hellfighters story taken for granted? There were black leaders that motivate others and encouraged soldiers to do what they think was right. A couple of those leaders were James Reese, Eugene Bullard, and Henry Johnson. “This book contains characters that were real, however, some were made up”, Max says under his Historical Notes. This book shows what it was like to be a Harlem Hellfighter, and how WW1 was in their eyes. James Reese was also known as “ The King of Jazz” or “Big Jim”, at this time he was the leader of the military band. In this book, he was yelling at a band member for being disrespectful. He came off hard but from my understanding, he had an even harder inside. James, however, was a strong believer in the Harlem Hellfighters. Eugene Bullard was America’s first black military aviator after he flew to France he became one of the most decorated military leaders. Henry had received the Croix De Guerre a French medal awarded to Heroes for their service and bravery. Henry also received the Medal of Honor 70 years after his death. While he was in combat guarding the front post, Henry and William Hayward had fended off over 30 Germans with the butt of their guns and bayonets. Henry has been stabbed in the foot shot in various places but he still managed to stay alive and fight for the French since his own country did not want any black soldiers fighting under the united states
