Author Washington Irving who is considered one of the Great American authors, wrote during the romanticism period. Particularly, in his work titled Rip Van Winkle written in 1819 we can see evidence of the characteristics, themes, and style identified with the romantic movement which was extant in American letters between 1800 and 1860. As a representative of such a movement. Washington Irving then remains one of the most identifiable and iconic writers of his time.

However, when he wakes up, not everything is the same as it once was when he was last awake. He had fallen asleep for twenty-years. Everything has changed, and he has escaped a few things from the sleep. He had avoided participating in the American Revolution war that was won, and his wife. He eventually finds his son who is named exactly like him, but is twenty years older. He is explained that officially, he was labeled as a missing person, and it stayed that for twenty-years. It assumed that a ghost visits every twenty-years and that Rip Van Winkle has been accompanying this ghost for the time in which he was missing.
