Washington Irving is a famous short story author commonly known for his stories Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. In Washington Irving’s short stories he tends to focus on one individual instead of the community. When Irving writes his, stories he takes more interest in one character over others. In all of Irving’s stories, he puts a focus on one main character. Whether it be Tom Walker in The Devil and Tom Walker, Rip in Rip Van Winkle, or Ichabod in Legend of Sleepy Hollow. In The Devil and Tom Walker Washington, Irving puts Tom Walker as the main character. The story takes place in a town a few miles out of Boston, Massachusetts. The story takes place in the small town of Sleepy Hollow which gets its name because it is a very drowsy town. Ichabod the main character is a very helpful man. He was a school teacher but, when he was teaching Ichabod assisted farmers with making hay. mending fences, cutting firewood, and taking horses and cows out to pasture. Ichabod quickly fell in love with a woman named Katrin Van Tassel. Ichabod had to compete for Katrina’s love because Bones was also very interested in her. One night both men were invited to a party at Katrina’s house. At the end of the night, Katrina told Ichabod she was not interested in him. Ichabod took off on his horses through the woods. Ichabod horse accidentally took the wrong path home. As they were riding through the woods Ichabod’s saddle came loose and he slipped off. At the end of the story, nobody could find Ichabod. All the searchers could find was horse tracks, a saddle and Ichabod’s hat. Nobody knows exactly what happened to Ichabod but he is thought to have gone away and became a judge.
