Rip Van Winkle, who is the main character, went into the woods and when he came back everything has changed. Washington Irving is the author of this book “Rip Van Winkle”, he takes the place as the character, Diedrich Knickerbocker. Rip Van Winkle is part of a Sketchbook. The setting in this story “Rip Van Winkle” is in the Kattskill Mountains. During, the time of the Revolution. Everyone loved him, in their town, except his wife. Rip was living with his family but, his wife would nag at him. He got tired of it, so he took his gun and dog and left for the mountains. He was this, because he would not listen to his wife, help to take care of their kids and stay at home. Dame demanding Rip Van Winkle to do stuff for her but he wouldn’t. She was saying her husband is hen-pecked. (Irving 10). He didn’t help his wife out, although, she would nag at him. She was scared to help her immature husband. (Irving 10). Dame Van Winkle had looked at wolf with such an evil eye (Irving 10). She hated the dog, but the dog was his friend. Rip Van Winkle is being immature by not helping with the kids, not listening to his wife, and not staying at home.

He was also very unfriendly. He was unfriendly by leaving his wife with their kids and talking about others. He was kind of making fun of others. “Gravest face with most mysterious silence, and were, withal, most melancholy party of pleasure to be witnessed,” (Irving 15) Saying they have grave faces and are quiet but also watching everything. Again he was making fun of others. Fashion was wearing short doublets, Jerkins and long knives in belts.
