The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Washington Irving was an author basically whose work was more towards romanticism. This short story was written by him in 1820. “ The legend of sleepy hollow” is a story about a small town known as “tarry town” or “Sleepy Hollow” which is a place famously known for its haunted and superstitious stories about ghosts and whispers. This story revolves around three characters, Katrina van tassel , Ichabod crane and Brom van brunt also known as Brom bones. The story is about how Ichabod crane a teacher tries to win the heart of Katrina van tassel, who is the daughter of a rich dutch farmer . During his stays at farms and houses, Ichabod would help the wives of farmers to babysit their children or help them with different things. This Helped him gain favour from the dutch wives and made a good name amongst them. He was also a source of gossip from one house to another. During his stays he enjoyed eating the finest food as he had a hunger which was never satisfied and had a taste for finer food. He also made some money teaching singing lessons to students as he was gifted with a fine voice which he took pride of. One of Ichabod’s singing lesson student was Katrina van tassel, the only child of Baltus van tassel. Baltus van tassel was one of the most richest farmers of that town. Katrina was a young girl known famous in her town not only for her beauty but also her riches. Ichabod fell for her charming looks but it was not until one day when he visited Baltus van tassels vast lands and riches, that he decided to win her hand.
Ichabod crane wasn’t the only man trying to win the hand of Katrina van tassel, it was also Brom bones. Brom bones was a well known person who was very skilled at horse riding and his strength and daring which made him a local hero. He also loved playing pranks on people. Filled with joy he left the children an hour early, and started dressing up for the party. He took almost an extra hour dressing and getting ready his best suite. Ichabod wanted to look handsome and gallant, and so he borrowed a horse from an old dutch farmer named Van ripper. The horse had lost all its qualities to the master . The name of the horse was gunpowder. One would have thought of the name to be the opposite to the horses qualitities, as the horse looked like a broken-down farm horse with a lanky figure. It looked as though the horse would fall off soon. And so Ichabod set off for the Van Tassel’s house. While on the way to the house he saw many farms owned by Baltus van tassel and started to dream of how rich he would be if he married Katrina. He reached in the evening and saw how everyone had turned up for the party. It was filled with the locals. Brom bones was present too, dressed in his best clothes and showing off his skills to people as usual. As Ichabod entered the house, Katrina van tassel greeted him. He could not resist the delicious food and so not wasting any time he ate whatever he could and tasted almost everything. While eating he also dreamt of becoming the owner of the house .
