The technological achievements of Washington state are vast, a major contributor to this is Microsoft. Microsoft is a computer software company that drastically changed the economic and cultural situation in Washington. Microsoft was founded in 1975 in Albuquerque New Mexico and relocated in 1979. Microsoft started out with its very first program, Windows 1.0, a graphical user interface layered on an MS-DOS (Microsoft Disc Operating System) it was very basic, but was the stepping stone for much greater achievements. Windows Vista however was not as successful over the program had sub-par performance, Windows 7 was a major improvement of Windows Vista. Most current programs from windows are Windows 8 and 10.

Microsoft greatly changed the culture of Washington state especially education. Microsoft has helped fund many projects that greatly improved our education system including: Thrive by Five Washington, STEM, TEALS, Code.org, United Way of King County's Parent-Child Home Program, and many more. All of these programs help educate kids from early learning to even college. Of the early learning programs mentioned was United Way of King County’s Parent-Child Home Program “The United Way of King County’s Parent-Child Home Program is an in home school readiness program for 2 to 4 year olds and their parents” due to this many kids will now be ready for school all with the help of microsoft's funding. Microsoft in 2008 contributed billions of dollars to the economy “Microsoft contributed $9.16 billion to the Washington state economy in 2008 through employee compensation and the company’s direct purchases of products and services, according to a Microsoft Economic Impact Study released today.” Moreover Microsoft contributed thousands of jobs to Washingtonians “ In addition, the company’s total direct and indirect job impact amounted to 267,611 jobs, or 8.4 percent of the total employment in the state.” Since Microsoft moved to Washington, Microsoft and the job rate thrived “In 1979, when Microsoft moved to Washington, it was a 30-employee, $3 million-company. In 2008, Microsoft was a 91,000-employee, $60 billion-company still headquartered in Washington, but with offices in 108 countries.” Microsoft also affected the economy indirectly as well by contributing technology that greatly increased production speeds in many companies throughout
