In the engrossing novel Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen, Jacob is more of a hero rather than a flawed character. Although there are many times where he does pick to do the most heroic actions, it is often forced upon him to not do so. Throughout the story, Jacob definitely shows many aspects of being a hero.
What really makes Jacob a hero is his strong sense of what is right and what is wrong. Although he is initially confused about whether or not August is a good person, Jacob quickly realizes that August is horrible person, who beats his wife and abuses animals. Over time, Jacob’s hatred for August increases. During this time, Jacob also falls in love with August’s wife, Marlena. However, as bad of a person August is, Jacob still tries his best to restrain himself from sleeping with another man’s wife. His sense of righteousness also brings upon a factor of guilt. When two of his closest friends are tossed off the train, he cannot help but feel guilty that he was not there to perhaps help or protect them. Jacob’s sense of right and wrong sets up his character to be a hero.

When Camel gets Jamaica ginger paralysis, Jacob convinces Walter to allow for Camel to live in their section of the train to reduce the risk which Camel will get red-lighted. But not only does Jacob sacrifice some room for Camel, he even gives up his father's gold watch for a medical examination for Camel. Jacob also cares deeply for Rosie. He cannot stand when August abuses her by beating her with the bull hook. Jacob also puts Silver Star out of its misery, as it is much better to end the horse’s suffering rather than letting it live in a tormented physical state.
