Waverly Jong: A Character Analysis
In Rules of the Game, a short story in “The Joy Luck Club”, we meet Waverly Jong, a Chinese- American that is a chess prodigy. The events that transpire in this story, mirror the life of the author, Amy Tan. In this story, we learn about Waverly’s experiences from the age of six to nine. We learn about her from: the communication between her mother and her, how others act around her, and her actions.
One of the best ways you can learn about someone is how they communicate with their parents. Although it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to listen to what your parents teach you daily, it takes real discipline to learn from those simple lessons your parents teach you. When shopping with her mother, Waverly wanted some salted plums. She begged to go into the store that sold them. Her mom told her to be quiet, thus teaching Waverly the importance of controlling herself. The next week I bit back my tongue as we entered the store with the forbidden candies. When my mother finished her shopping, she quietly plucked a small bag of plums from the rack and put it on the counter with the rest of the items. By controlling her want for the plums, her mother decides to buy some for her the following week. Another time we learn about the type of person that Waverly seems to be, is the altercation with her mother regarding her success with chess. When Mrs. Jong would take Waverly shopping with her, she would often brag to people about her daughter’s success. My mother would proudly walk with me, visiting many shops, buying very little.
