Waynesboro Symphony Concert Report Sample

I recently attended the Waynesboro Symphony Concert held at First Presbyterian Church on April 29, 2017. This season was titled, “Jubilation, Tragedy, and Fate”. This performance featured works from three well-known composers including Carl Maria von Weber, Tchaikovsky, and Edward Elgar. The first piece titled, “Jubilee” by Carl Maria von Weber was a breathtaking overture. I found this overture to be fun and cheery, yet to also have soft, peaceful moments. The beginning of the piece is bold and loud, then it gradually fades into a light, eery rhythm with attention to the clarinets. This continued throughout the overture, going from a bold and loud rhythm to a soft and delicate rhythm and back again to the bold and loud rhythm. My favorite parts were the soft and delicate moments where the clarinets seemed to control the audience with their peaceful melody. 4 in F minor, Op. 36 by Tchaikovsky also had four movements. Movement I is overly dramatic with its loud beginning, with specific emphasis on the trumpets. As movement I continues, it gradually gets a more even tone, yet it still had bursts of loud tones with attention to the horned instruments. Movements II, III, and IV, all contained similar plaintive sounds. Each of these three movements contained a similar rhythm with even tones, and special emphasis on the softness of the oboe and clarinet to produce a predictable and melancholy sound. Altogether, I did not enjoy this piece as much as I did the second piece by Edward Elgar. I found it to be somewhat slow, and when it the upbeat came, the horns to be mildly too loud and somewhat annoying. However, I still see how this piece was considered to be a masterpiece and one of Tchaikovsky’s greatest compositions for there is a somewhat of beauty in the melancholy tones of the
