Ways Courage is Shown Courage is looked at in several different ways. It can be shown in the face of fear, out of love, and against the odds. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is demonstrated by the characters Boo Radley, Jem, and Atticus. First, Boo exercises his courage when he needs it the most and in the face of fear. For example, he leaves Jem and Scout the treasures in the knot of the tree even though he is afraid of the outside world (78). Boo wants to have someone to connect with like all other humans, and for him to be condemned is not fair. He is locked inside so he gets very lonely so his only way of connection is the knot hole. In addition, he comes to the rescue for Scout and Jem even though he could have been killed (351). Even though he could’ve been killed he looked past his own well being he knew they needed help. When fear is a factor it is very difficult to show courage. In the end Boo came through and turned out to be a hero even though he was misunderstood. …show more content…

When he reads to Mrs. Dubose after he wrecked her flowers is an example of when he shows courage (140). She always criticizes him so it is hard to show courage even when he is being made fun of. He is very brave to do this because he hates her but he is respecting her, and it is very tough to be strong in the face of adversity. In addition he fights Bob Ewell to save Scouts life even when he gets his arm broken badly, during the fight Scout narrates, “More scuffling, and then there came a dull crunching sound and Jem screamed.” (351-352) Jem showed his deep love for Scout by doing everything in his power to get her home safely. Putting one’s own life on the line is the toughest kind of bravery to show. Jem always looks out for Scout and would do anything for
