Rationale: The Things I Carry In part 4: Critical study, we have examined the text The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, I have attempted to replicate a passage from his work to exemplify both the physical and the abstract things I carry with me on a daily basis. Through my written task, “The Things I Carry”, I have attempted to capture an honest introspection of a girl of indomitable spirit despite all the ordeals in her life by mimicking Tim O’ Brien’s writing style. I mirrored O’ Brien’s writing style in how I structured my essay.
How to Read Literature Like a Professor is a book that shows numerous ways and strategies to understand what their reading. Each chapter shows examples from books and use of literary devices that can help develop the meaning of the story. Think of this book as reading between the lines. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald used people to symbolize objects or things to let the reader have an interpretation on the characters. For example, the green light represents Gatsby's future for him and Daisy to be together.
Genre Throughout the different texts we analyzed in the first half of the quarter, we looked at the various genres of the texts in order to see how they affect rhetoric. Genres are important to rhetoric because they raise and manage expectations the audience might have for a specific work. This is because people have internalized the generic conventions of a genre. We delved into these conventions by analyzing different genres of texts such as Pitbull’s music video, film, various poems, and speeches. An example of how we analyzed a genre is how we annotated Horace’s poem about carpe diem.
In her short story “The Life You Save May be Your Own,” Flannery O’Connor uses characterization and symbolism to develop the theme that selfish actions lead to self destruction. While Mr. Shiftlet obtains the Crater’s car, doing so leaves him less happy than before. “In spite of the car,” Mr. Shiftlet becomes “more depressed than ever” after abandoning Lucynell. By acting on his selfish desires, Mr. Shiftlet rejects the opportunity to form a connection with Lucynell, leaving him feeling alone in a desolate world. Thus, Mr. Shiftlet’s pursuit of the Crater’s car brings him misery rather than happiness.
Shawn Achor, psychological researcher, speaker, author and CEO of GoodThinkInc., an American organization which offers services and seminars to promote improved work performance through positive psychology. Achor argues in his February, 2011 presentation at a TEDx event in Bloomington, Indiana, that changing the formula of success and choosing to live in a world where happiness inspires productivity can be achieved by retraining your brain to be more positive over the course of 21-days. The content of Achor’s speech claimed that we are wired to believe happiness comes only after we have achieved success in the form of thoughts like "I'll be happy when I finish school", or "I'll be happy when I find a job." Everyday Use Literary Analysis “Maggie will be nervous until her sister goes. ”(Pg.50 line7) This is quote from the story Everyday Use by Alice Walker. The story revolves around a girl called Dee, her mom and sister Maggie. They have different opinions on different subjects especially relating to heritage.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.

Paul Abramson is a psychology professor at UCLA. There he teaches classes on Human Sexuality and Sex & The Law. He has written several books on romance, sexuality, and relationships. In his 2007 article “The Right to Romance: Why Universities Shouldn’t Prohibit Relations Between Teachers and Students” he argues for student/teacher relationships. He believes it is a restriction of rights and in his article he uses several appeals to validate his argument.
Have you ever tried to bolster a child’s self-esteem by saying “You can be anything you want when you grow up”? What if you knew that in today’s society, saying this would increase disappointment; thus faltering a child’s self-esteem later on in life. Author Leslie Garrett, who wrote the article “You Can Do It, Baby!” in 2015, talks about the common phenomena of hindering a child’s opportunity of finding satisfaction in life, by encouraging them that they will grow up to be anything they want, without limitations. Garrett utilizes rhetorical devices to promote the emotional and logical perspectives supporting her claim; however, she incorporates a handful of in-text citations from scholars, psychiatrists, and academic professionals in order to persuade the reader of the article’s credibility.
According to Lemony Snicket, “[You should] never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them” and writer Stephen King presumably would agree. In On Writing, pages one forty-seven through one fifty, King uses diction, critical and ardent tones and figurative language, to highlight the significance of reading and how it benefits a writer. King utilizes diction to persuade aspiring writers to read regularly. He writes, “I take a book with me everywhere I go, and find there are all sorts of opportunities to dip in.” (147) “Waiting rooms were made for books—of course!
In Joyce Carol Oates’s short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” the main protagonist finds herself in a very hostile situation. With an all most fateful encounter with a man known as Arnold Friend. Forcing her to choose whether to run off with him or taking her by force. This man known as Arnold Friend to the reader comes off as almost a demon. A person who uses many temptations, word play, and threats to take advantage of the young protagonist Connie.
Maria W. Stewart Analysis In this excerpt of a lecture given by Maria W. Stewart in the year 1832, she has a strong point: Although the African Americans in the northern colonies were free, they were not treated equal as the white people were. Stewart uses a variety of rhetorical strategies to bring her point in the situation, such as argument, compare and contrast, and appeal to ethos. Along with the persistent and serious tone, it is clear that she sees the unfair treatment of African Americans a major problem.
This is a literary analysis on the novel 1984 by George Orwell. 1984 is a more recent classic dystopian novel. Written in 1949, it's based in the future year of what is presumed to be 1984. It focuses on the life of Winston Smith, a member of the newly established Party that rules over a territory called Oceania and that is led by a man called Big Brother. This novel provides a rather frightening insight into a dystopian socialist environment.
The New and Lonesome Normal Joyce Oates’s “Hi Howya Doin” depicts the violence that has captured and encapsulated today’s culture. The un-deemed murder of an innocent jogger in the end of this story validates and justifies the fear that so many individuals feel. In Oates’s short story, “Hi Howya Doin”, the protagonist is depicted as a “Good-looking husky guy six-foot-four in the late twenties or early thirties, Caucasian male…..solid built as a fire hydrant, carries himself like an athlete, or an ex-athlete” (214). Through the police report, giving the description of the protagonist, Oates foretells his surprising fate at the beginning of the story which in turn, creates tension and suspense for the reader as the protagonist goes about what
