Have you heard any good songs lately? I certainly have, and it was one of the better 80’s songs (about history) that i've heard. The title of the song is “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel. The song was chock full of historical events ranging from Hula Hoops to Ho Chi Minh. The song portrays events from times before and after the 1950’s when Joel was born, Joel made the song to explain that his generation inherited a lot of the bad in the world and was pretty much forced into an attempted clean up of some of the world’s problems. He wrote the song when a buddy of Sean Lennon said that nothing happened in the 50’s (when Joel was born). The song lists the many events from 1949-1989 in chronological order, yet seems to skip a few events here and there. …show more content…

It reached the top of the Billboard 100’s and was also nominated for a Grammy. The song still gets played on some of the more hardcore 80s radio stations. One notable thing for sure is that most history teachers love the song because of Billy Joel’s list of the major historical events of his life provides a lesson plan with a catchy melody. The lyrics are a stream of events that Joel felt his generation was not responsible for. A lot of the references are to the Cold War, a problem that his generation inherited. Joel lists many historical events and people, but one person in particular stood out to me. The 37th president himself, Richard Milhous Nixon born on January 9, 1913, in Yorba Linda, California. Richard Nixon was a congressman who served as the vice president under Eisenhower. Nixon ran for the presidency in 1960 but lost to Massachusetts senator John F. Kennedy. Nixon had later returned to the election eight years later and won the election. In 1974, he resigned instead of being impeached for covering up the illegal activities of party members in the Watergate scandal. He died on April 22,
