‘We Shall Fight on the Beaches’ is a speech given by Winston Churchill on June 4th, 1940. Only 8 moths after the start of World War II Churchill took over as Prime Minister of England, replacing Neville Chamberlain. He had spent his entire term attempting to lead a country through a terrible world war. The speech known as ‘We Shall Fight on the Beaches’ or as ‘We will Never Surrender’ takes place toward the end of the Dunkirk evacuation. The Dunkirk evacuation consisted of both English and French Allied troops from Dunkirk in Northern France. The evacuation was also known as the Miracle of Dunkirk, as it was a miracle that they could evacuate at all. At Dunkirk, the allied troops were surrounded by the Germans, their escape was called by Churchill in ‘We Shall Fight on the Beaches’ as a “miracle of deliverance”. …show more content…

Churchill was speaking to the members of parliament, England, and the world, although only parliament got to hear it in the moment. As with any public speech by the Prime Minister, he expected this one to be retold in the papers the next day. With this expectation, Churchill had to tailor his speech not just to his peers in parliament, but also the world. He had to be able to motivate the people, and to reassure them that although Dunkirk was a loss that they would still prevail. In Churchill’s speech, he tells of how the British and French narrowly escaped at Dunkirk. He also had to, with tact, mention France and the possibility of it falling to Nazi powers.
