Midwestern communities' wealth and poverty present complex issues that demand a multifaceted analysis from various social science disciplines. The effects of these disparities have an effect on people's quality of life, access to necessary resources, and participation in society. Understanding the factors causing wealth and poverty in these regions is essential to developing policies and initiatives that promote economic equality and reduce inequality. Sociology enables us to examine social structures and systems that perpetuate inequality, such as racism, sexism, and classism, while economics aids in evaluating wealth-accumulation factors like education, inheritance, and access to capital. Political science aids in understanding how political systems and policies, such as progressive taxation, social safety nets, and labor laws, affect efforts to reduce poverty.

According to a University of South Carolina study, the decline in the availability and accessibility of health care providers in rural communities is a critical factor causing wealth and poverty disparities. In this study, "structural urbanism," components of the current public health and healthcare systems that harm rural communities, are highlighted. Larger populations are naturally favored by biases in health care funding models, which treat health care as an individual service rather than a component of population infrastructure.
