If you’re looking for a short, boring story about some rich guy, this book isn’t for you. If you’re looking for a story with flat, emotionless characters, this book isn’t for you. If you’re looking for an engaging story with emotional, detailed characters, and a rich plot, then this book could possibly be for you. The Great Gatsby takes place in 1920’s New York, and follows the life of a mysterious man of wealth, Mr. Jay Gatsby. In particular, it follows Gatsby, and his quest to get back his former lover, Daisy, who is now married to a man named Tom. This book contains elements of love, wealth, and the American dream. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby in first person, through Daisy’s cousin, Nick Carraway’s point of view. Although it isn’t the simplest book ever to read, it certainly isn’t impossibly hard to understand. Because the book takes place in the 1920’s, their English is bound to be slightly different than our modern English. Gatsby does not change throughout the book, his goal remains the same throughout the entire book, to get Daisy back. Speaking of Daisy, she also doesn’t change at all. Daisy has been surrounded by wealth her entire life, and that does not change by the end of the book. Daisy has grown bored by her life of luxury: “I’ve been everywhere and seen everything and done everything.” (20). Nick is the only character who drastically changes.
