The summer before senior year I worked at the local movie theater and it was a great experience. One of the greatest perks of the job was that I got two free tickets everyday and fifty percent off of food. Prices of movies have really skyrocketed recently and families would come in and spend close to one hundred dollars at the movie theater. This is a problem for the movie theater, as people are not too keen on spending a lot of money on a movie they don’t like. This is why movie reviews are helpful, because they can give you some indication if you are going to like the movie or not. This is needed to give the audience some idea of what the movie would be like, and give them some indication on whether they would enjoy the movie or not. The more exciting the author of the review makes the summary, the more likely the reader will want to go see it. The reviewer can use the summary to either entice or dissuade the audience from going to see the movie, depending on how enthralling they make their summary. The summary also must be short, because if it is too long, the reader will lose interest. Mark Jenkins of NPR says that in the movie Thelma, the titular character, “Grasped by lust, begins to have seizures which threaten herself and others, and lead to a course of eerie medical tests, as well as some theological speculation”(Jenkins), after she finds herself attracted to a female classmate. If a reader sees someone’s name whose work they have enjoyed in the past, it could entice them to see them to go see their new feature. In a review of The Handmaiden, James Berardinelli describes the director, Chan-wook Park’s, style as, “violent and degrading”(Berardinelli) while also having, “an underlying current of dark humor”(Berardinelli), which not only would persuade fans of Park’s work, but also fans of the aspects he describes. Oftentimes, the mention of specific actors is enough for people to want to see a movie, as in today’s day and age there is a big fascination concerning celebrity culture. Most people have favorite actors, who they would see any film for, and some people have strong aversions to certain actors, so much so, that they would write off the entire movie just because they saw their name in the cast
