The present urbanized environment and the mechanization of utilities that make life convenient and comfortable promote a seated lifestyle. This lifestyle is commonplace where working people spend most days sitting before computers and again sitting at home for hours in front of a television. Domestic chores made easy and fast through technology leave more time available for sitting around. Inevitably, all these sittings done in a day become a big factor in becoming overweight or obese. People with weight problems resorts to exercises as the solution to reduce weight.

Basically, NEAT refers to spontaneous and involuntary activity which represents a predominant component of everyday activity. When you walk from your desk to any point in the office or when you stand and head to your refrigerator from your living room for a glass of water, you are spontaneously performing activities associated with non-exercise activity thermogenesis. The very act of spontaneously walking already entails burning of calories and therefore an increase in metabolism.
What makes NEAT essential is the fact that activities are involuntary and as trivial as fidgeting. Further, these activities ordinarily occur at work, during your leisure time, when you walk in or out of the office, tap your toe in time with the music, wash your hair or the dishes, sing and dance, give your dog a bath or walk your dog around the block. All these ordinary physical activity when added use up more energy than does physical exercises alone. Energy expended through spontaneous activity therefore makes it a major factor that significantly impacts the daily energy balance.
