Welfare Programs Reduce Poverty

Should the United States continue to provide welfare programs do these programs really help to reduce poverty? Many argue that they only perpetuate the cycles of poverty and others disagree that their own paycheck should contribute to the assistance of the unemployed. The truth is that only a small proportion of tax money goes to welfare programs and more benefits are being found than negative outcomes of welfare programs, suggesting that these programs may be well worth government backing. However, if the government is to continue providing such assistance, they may also need to reconsider the policies and goals of welfare.

Research suggests that government assistance for low-income and working-class families in the form of welfare and food stamp programs provides many benefits, both financially and non-economic. In a study comparing several immediate and long-term economic outcomes of early adult participation in food stamp programs, researchers found that only a small age group between 26-30 years was effected by using food stamps over time, and that any the negative outcomes found were only short-term (VartaAnian, Houser, Harness, 2011).

Offering better opportunities for employment will allow not only women, but any individual who is unemployed and in need of government assistance, to obtain and maintain a steady paying job, which will not only decrease the need for government assistance, but ultimately decrease poverty. Welfare programs have always been centered around encouraging those receiving aid to move from assistance to work. It may be that these programs are failing however in offering the appropriate opportunities and assistance to make employment a realistic
