Report of Interview with Wendy Blanchard:
Case Manager for Platform Youth Services

The following interview was conducted over the phone and consisted of questions regarding the values, challenges, highlights or contextual influences that are faced when working with young people. The interviewee, Wendy Blanchard, provides case management in Katoomba for individuals (aged 12-25) at risk of or who are homeless, in a program called ‘The Glue Factory’ for Platform Youth Services (PYS).

Qualifications, Skills and Values

Wendy achieves this through not allowing the clients behaviour to affect how she works with them, keeping an open mind, being non-judgment and maintaining strong boundary settings. Wendy also adheres to the professional values of the Platform Youth Services of caring about clients, valuing integrity, ensuring everyone has a voice and encourage their clients to have a sense of personal fulfilment (Platform Youth Services 2018).2

Intervention Methods, Theories, Goals

At PYS, Wendy’s’ practice framework stems from a strength, holistic and client based approach. This involves enhancing the client’s personal agency, critically evaluating all areas of their lives, providing them with the appropriate resources to achieve their self-determined goals and ensuring positive recreational outcomes that covers their whole world. Although, the immediacy and length of emergency accommodation a client will need for the night, week or long-term is assessed first.

Wendy and PYS follow Maslows’ hierarchy of needs through addressing the deficiency needs of safety, belonging, housing, food or laundry security and financial support before progressing with their growth needs (Noltemeyer et al 2012).
