8 March 2018 Were America’s Actions Justified, During the Cold War? During the Cold War, America started a trade embargo with Cuba, John F Kennedy created a blockade against Cuba, the United States stalled the immigration of innocent Cuban refugees, and the government planned several assassination attempts against Fidel Castro. Over the years many people have wondered whether or not America’s actions during the Cold War were justified. Many believe that America was justified because Cuba received missiles from Russia, Castro created the first communist country in the Western Hemisphere, and Soviet spies were found in America during World War II. In 1962, Soviet missiles had been discovered in Cuba (Brownell, 52). Alongside the discovery of the Soviet missiles, multiple launch pads, fire control bunkers, and barricades were also discovered (Immell, 23) After the missiles had been found, more Soviet technicians arrived in Cuba with rocket launchers (Immell, 23). Each Cuban military base had seven missiles, four launchers, one hundred vehicles, and enough tents for five hundred men (Immell, 28). Several of the aforementioned missile sights had missiles capable of carrying nuclear weapons in a range of at least 2,500 miles (Immell, 48). The collapse of the Soviet Union effectively ended the Cold War. Once the Cold War ended, the United States gain more power and the economy became stronger. America’s actions during the Cold War are justifiable because Cuba had many missiles from the Soviet Union and they not only could have used them against America but other countries within a 1000 nautical mile radius (Immell). However, after the Cold War, America could have been more lenient with Cuba considering that the American government and business owners have taken advantage of the Cuban people in the past. Although America treated Cuban refugees horribly after the Cold War, the Cuban blockade and the Trade embargo are justified because the Soviet Union collapse ended the war and many communist countries faced economic problems that ended the communist rule in most
