Reconstruction, whether that be good or bad, was a huge part of the 1860s. Major groups such as African Americans and Southerners were both deeply affected. However, the effect was super circumstantial for both groups. Problems in agriculture, government, the community, and some organizations were some of the defining moments in these two groups. Reconstruction on African Americans was very beneficial, as well as harmful. With reconstruction blacks were slowly but surely being given the basic rights that they deserved. However, just because blacks were finally granted rights, doesn't mean they were granted respect. Some of the blacks that had positions in government, such as Abraham Colby, were sometimes beaten by people that opposed the Radical Republicans. If an African American were to be elected for any position in government, they most likely to tried to make strides for other African Americans. This is in turn caused more of an uproar between the two races as the roles that blacks were suppose to fill, were not being followed. In some cities most blacks were being denied basic rights, that had been granted to them previously. People were being denied access to the churches, beaten, getting their homes and properties destroyed, and threatened greatly. The safety of blacks was slowly lowering as the southerners, or democrats, were once again dehumanizing them. With this progress, came violence. Blacks finally had a platform that they could utilize to the best of their abilities and finally make a change not only for them, but for everyone else that opposed them. Southerners were on the opposing side of reconstruction. Most southerners were impacted agriculturally. However, a large underlying tone is the roles being balanced, not being favorable. Most southerners were furious that blacks were slowly making progress in society, and therefore started to blame them. Stating that the reason for crops being destroyed, not having money for luxuries, or even justifying murder, was because of blacks. Southerners felt as though they were being given the short end of the stick, when in reality roles were just being evenly distributed. The impact that reconstruction had on southerners was viewed as wrong in their eyes. However, on the flip side the reconstruction was simply making things fair, which they didn't like. With the reconstruction people were now justifying and murder against blacks, simply stating that it would essentially put things back into order. From this hate, hate organizations, as I mentioned previously, were created. The KKK was a group that killed or terrorized any african american or republican, for the sheer fact that they were either not white or not democrat, or both.
