World War 2 had just ended but Germany was facing other problems. East Germany was deep in the communism and people were trying to outrun it, but East Germany clearly didn’t want that. On 13th August 1961, East Germans found themselves waking up to a wall that stopped them from seeing their families and going to their jobs. With guards and all, the government made it clear they didn’t want anyone crossing it or the consequences would be severe. West Germany and East Germany became two totally different countries for several years and you could hardly say that they used to be a united country.
Before the Second World War, berlin was known as the most industrial city and it had a good trading center. Afterwards, the city got divided in 1949 into the east and West Germany. West Germany was divided into 3 “zones of occupation”. The 3 zones were separated into the British, the Americans and the French because they helped control West Germany. So many people who were good, hard and skillful workers suddenly couldn’t go to their jobs and were left workless. Life in East Germany wasn’t good because there were low wages while everything was very expensive and there was a limited amount of goods that could be bought. The two parts of Germany became very different because each city got their own currency, their own police force and even their own public systems. They even got their own capitals which were East Berlin for East Germany and West Berlin for West Germany. People were trying to fight for their freedom because in the beginning of the 1950’s a new law was created that crossing the wall would be a crime that would be dealt with harshly. Over the years 10,000 people tried to breakout from East Germany but only half succeeded. The ones who didn’t succeed would be killed or captured.
