Westgate Resort Westgate Resorts is one of the three largest public or private timeshare companies in the world with 28 resorts in 11 states. Although it was formed in 1970, the company did not start the timeshare business until around 1980 and only started selling timeshares in 1982. According to the article, in October 2008, the company had to go into survival mode due to the credit markets freezing. The company was forced to lay off employees in sales and marketing. They chose these departments so that it would not have a direct affect on their owners. Westgate owners are responsible for paying a fee every year to cover maintenance, taxes, utilities and general upkeep of the property. We have used this resort for the past 5 years as our family vacation. This year was the worst year that we have had due to the amount of people at the resort and the lack of activities we could participate in. We booked our vacation 3 months in advance at which time we were told the check in time was 4:00 pm. We arrive at the Westgate Town Center at 4:30 pm, we had to wait in line for over 2 hours, just to be told our rooms were not ready yet and that it would be at least another 2 hours. My parents were livid at this point. They purchased this at a preconstruction price in 2006 and paid thousands less for the unit. When they purchased the timeshare, there were not as many buildings as there are now, which means there were not as many people either. They participated in the 90 minute timeshare tour and ultimately decided that it was a good investment for our family at the time. In the past 5 years, this location has built a water park and 3 more tower locations. It has become so busy that we cannot enjoy any of the activities that the resort offers, because they either do not have enough equipment or have the activity in the middle of the day. Our complaint to the resort is that we paid for the activities and we pay our fees how is it that for the last 2 years we have not been able to enjoy them because they do not have enough equipment? They usually let you stay at the resort for free and give you free tickets just for touring. I understand the marketing behind this. If you want people to buy your property, you want them to stay at the resort and get the feel of it. When you are touring the facility you get sent to a VIP desk to check in and out. The process runs rather smooth and quickly. You get a free breakfast or lunch while doing the tour and you have a personal concierge at your beckon call. Your concierge takes you anywhere you need to go on a golf cart and therefore you do not have to walk to use any of the activities. Once you are an owner, all of that comes to a screeching
