What About Bob is an example of a dysfunctional and inappropriate patient-psychiatrist relationship. In the movie Dr Leo Marvin is a successful psychiatrist who has his own private practice and had his first book published. The day before Dr. Marvin decides to head off for a vacation with his family, he receives a telephone call from another psychiatrist. He asks that Dr. Marvin takes on one of his clients that Leo does take on the new clients but informs his colleague that he will not be able to meet until he returns from his vacation.
Bob Wiley (Bill Murray) in the beginning of the movie has his first session with Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss) after hearing all his problems which include symptoms that can be characterized as having General Anxiety Disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and agoraphophia. Bob describes his presenting problems as having panic disorder with agoraphobia, hypochondria, multiple phobias, as well as a personality that makes him very dependent.
