Ludwig van Beethoven is renowned for writing some of his most famous musical pieces deaf, but is that everything he contributed to the world of classical music? To grow to become one of the foremost composers in both our time and his, takes more than natural ability, although that is important, it requires additional effort such as diligence, practice, and a desire to become something more than what you are. For Beethoven things were perhaps not as ideal as many would like to think. Though he accomplished a significant amount of works he did not do so without many arduous and exhausting circumstances. At a premature time in Beethoven’s life his father, Johann van Beethoven, decided he wanted his son to become a celebrated virtuoso, and began teaching him how to play several musical instruments. His father’s lessons were severe and rigorous which, more often than not, fringed on the line of barbarism. Under his father’s tutorage Beethoven, for even the slightest of indecisions or error, was beaten, locked in a cellar, flogged, or forced to practice without a sufficient amount of sleep. Beethoven, although adept in his musical talents, was not as well versed in the academic aspect; he struggled with numbers and spelling throughout his schooling and most of his life, but was marginally thought to be a mediocre student. Soon though, his calling for music surpassed even his need for education, and he left school at age 10. Beethoven then began to pursue a more musical path and studied under the guidance of the Court Organist, Christian Gottlob Neefe, who later introduced Beethoven to Bach. At age fourteen Beethoven was appointed the sole provider for his family since his father could no longer contribute due to his abuse of alcohol throughout the years. This led to Beethoven becoming the Assistant Court Organist and earning a substantial annual income. Beethoven began to enhance his career when he traveled back to Bonn to help his mother, who had grown unwell in his absence.
