Elvis Presley is known as the King of Rock‘n’Roll with his rockabilly, rhythm, blues, controversial stage presence, and hit songs. Elvis Presley is widely thought of as one of the most successful recording artist of all time. He was idolized by generations, but never strayed from his true self. Elvis came from poverty, but did not let that keep him from becoming one of the most successful and wealthy artist of his time (“Elvis Presley.” Research in Context). Elvis Presley changed music forever with his raw talent, controversial rhythm, and unbelievable achievements. Elvis was at the top of the charts for 36 weeks and during the same year he released five number one songs. Elvis showed his talent in acting with his first movie, Love Me Tender and continued to make movies with much success. Elvis was soon drafted in the army, but returned two years later ready to work on movies, recording, and his 1968 TV special instead of concerts. When he opened in Las Vegas in 1969, he broke all the city’s attendance records and returned six months later to break his attendance record. Elvis returned back to concerts with a seven year tour including over a thousand concert in the 70’s. For Elvis to maintain his tour lifestyle he used several prescription medications, but this led to two of his old friends publishing a book on his drug use. The book had Elvis extremely paranoid, fearing and having recurring nightmares that he lost everything (Petersen). His lifestyle became too much on August 16, 1977 when he died in his bathroom in Graceland from heart failure ("Elvis Presley." Research in Context). Elvis is remembered for his talent, daring moves and beyond amazing accomplishments. Not only was a Rock’n’Roll legend, but he was also a wealthy man where generosity came natural. The Elvis Presley Charitable Fund was formed to honor Presley's’ memory and continue his generosity. In Memphis, the Arts, education, youth programs, and Goodwill Homes has been constantly supported by The Elvis Presley Charitable Fund. Another program known as Presley Place, helps certain homeless families get back to providing for themselves with free housing, child care, counseling, guidance, and many other resources to help families up to a year (Honey). When it comes to education, Elvis funds the Elvis Presley Endowment Scholarship Fund for College of Communication and Fine Arts students looking in degrees relating to Elvis’ (Honey). Elvis was also known for his generosity, for instance, ”...he would spontaneously give away cash, jewelry, and automobiles. A number of Elvis’ concerts served to benefit charities, and each year Elvis gave at least $1,000 to each of Memphis’ 50 charities, and made further donations around the world”(Honey).
