Garrett A. Morgan was an African American, who was born in Paris, KY, March 4, 1877. He was 16 years old when he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. He spent most of his teenage life working as a handyman landowner. Then in 1895 moved from Cincinnati to Cleveland, where there he died July 27, 1963. When he moved from Cincinnati, he only had a sixth grade education. He was the seventh child out of eleven. Through his his life he achieved great accomplishments. He achieved these accomplishments by becoming an inventor and a entrepreneur. Some of his accomplishments were inventing a gas mask, and Traffic signal, and he also opened up his own repair shop. In 1907, Morgan opened up his own sewing repair shop. He got into the sewing business because when he moved to Cleveland, he began his career as a sewing machine mechanic. His business became a success. He became wealthier from it; Therefore, 1909 he expanded his business and included a tailoring shop that employed 35 employees. He began making a lot of money from his company. He became the first black men in cleveland to own a car. Also with his money, he began donating money to black colleges. …show more content…
This also was a successful invention he had. This invention was used a lot in world war 1. Also, In 1914 he received the first Gold medal at the international Exposition of Sanitation and safety in New York City. It was of July 25, 1916, which was the another reason why he got the medal. Making national news for using his gas mask to rescue 32 men trapped during an explosion in an underground tunnel 250 ft beneath Lake Erie. This invention got him on the news and so so it changed his
