These fairy tales show adolescent girls that if you go through a life threatening situation your prince charming will come to save you. It also teaches girls that through all of this they transform into “passive and docile creatures” (14-15).
It is well-known in modern culture that children begin developing gender identities from a very young age. As soon as children are able to comprehend media and the actions of those around them, they are bombarded with examples of gender roles. In fact, they are presented with these examples even before they can comprehend them. Parents may begin reading children books right from birth. The gender roles that are often present in these picture books aimed at young children become ingrained in the minds of the children, kickstarting the development of gender identity.

When the tale of Beowulf was created, it was an oral epic that was spoken. This film has ‘taught’ and/or shown little girls to stop everything they are currently doing and to become dependent on a man to save the day. Cinderella can be seen as the ultimate example of a “damsel-in-distress” because she gets saved from being “abused, humiliated and a servant in her own house to her stepmother and stepsisters” (Cinderella). The movie “The Princess and the Frog” is not your typical “boy saves girl” movie. Instead, this Disney movie presents us with a strong female lead who doesn’t need a man to achieve her goals. In many previous Disney movies, it is demonstrated that a girl needs a man in order to get her happily ever after. Without a prince, she is nothing. In “The Princess and the Frog” the gender roles are presented to us as equal, even reverse at times.

The existence of fairy tales have been around for years, throughout the years there have been many interpretations and retells of the stories, an example is Little Red Riding Hood, this traditional fairy tale is one known in different forms. Overall Little Red Riding Hood’s topic in most of the retells is to listen to parents, since they know best. In Grimm’s version, “Little Red Cap”, the theme is about the loss of childhood innocence, obeying parents, as well as being cautious with one 's surroundings. Meanwhile, Angela Carter’s feminist version of the film “The Company of Wolves”, is about the loss of sexual innocence.
