“Jealousy is just love and hate at the same time (Drake).” In the opening scene of Othello, Iago and Roderigo were having a discussion. Iago explains how he is enraged over Othello choosing Cassio to be his next in command instead of Iago himself after all the time he spent serving him. Also, Roderigo explains how upset his that Othello is married to Desdemona because Roderigo has bin trying to be with her for a long time. So long that he is in love with her and want her back. Both Iago and Roderigo have evil intentions. Iago plans are to ruin Othello’s reputation and destroy him mentally and also kill Cassio. Roderigo’s plans are to kill Othello and to try his hardest to win the heart of Desdemona. The handkerchief that Desdemona was given by her husband Othello was first owned by his mother. It was given to her by an Egyptian Charmer who said that if the handkerchief is given to the person you are married to, then it would keep them from having an affair. Othello gave the handkerchief to Desdemona as a sign of his love and because his mother gave it to him, to give to his wife when he gets married. Desdemona talks to the handkerchief because it reminds her of her husband, Othello. Emilia, the wife of Iago, was force by her husband to steal the handkerchief. Then, she gave it to her Iago, who planted it in Cassio’s room, where Cassio eventually finds it. Iago knew how much the handkerchief meant to Othello, so having Cassio in possession of the exact handkerchief Desdemona had can mess with his mind and make him even more jealous.
