The protagonist in this story is Jim Hawkins, who is twelve or thirteen years old. On the beginning, he lives with his parents in a inn. He can be very courageous, like when he was gone back to the ship, when they were in Treasure Island. [quote: chapter 27, Pieces of Eight, page 250]: “I went below and did what I could for my wound; it pained me a good deal and still bled freely, but it was neither deep nor dangerous, nor did it greatly gall me when I used my arm. Then I looked around me, and as the ship was now, in a sense, my own, I began to think of clearing it from its last passenger—the dead man, O’Brien.
As Cole navigates his way through these hardships he learns to develop empathy, deal with overwhelming emotions, and appreciate nature.

Despite his early academic struggles, by the time the third grade school year ended school Alton had made tremendous progress. Medina recalled Alton has “an average kid in school and stated, he wasn’t a scholar, but he did his work and he liked going to school.” Complimentary comments from his teachers about his hard work and improved effort are reflective of the satisfactory grades he then began to receive. In contrast, the progress notes also foreshadowed an area of Alton’s that he still continues to struggle with. Concern surrounding his socialization skills, his teachers highlighted an area that he needed to improve on.
Everybody has someone in his or her life who teaches him or her how to be a better person. Throughout the novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain uses Jim, a slave, as a source of symbolism for Huck’s maturity. First, Jim teaches Huck about what it truly means to be civilized. Next, Jim shows Huck about the value of family. Lastly, Jim teaches Huck about racial inequality and how to accept people.
Jim’s emptiness and maturity prevails over his dangerous
In my opinion I believe that Joshua Phillips’ life was dictated and shaped by his childhood upbringing. I believe this because violent homes greatly affect children’s mental health and the way they grow up. Children only reflect what adults decide to show them, so living in a house with a violent parent and experiencing domestic abuse is bound to result in some kind of changed behavior. Joshua Earl Patrick Phillips was born on March 17, 1984 in Allentown, Pennsylvania to Steve and Melissa Phillips.

Huck faces many challenges in which his maturity will play a part in making the correct decision for himself and his friend Jim.
