Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement The Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 60s forever changed America, and gave African Americans many rights and freedoms that they were denied earlier. This movement was lead by brave and courageous leaders, some well known like Martin Luther King Jr., and Jackie Robinson, and other lesser known leaders such as Ralph Abernathy. Their heroic efforts to fight injustice paved the way for many positive changes in our country. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became involved in politics early on in his life, and quickly rose to become the face of the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King Jr. was a pastor in a Baptist church from Atlanta, and first got involved in the movement in 1955 when he helped organize the Montgomery bus boycott.
Martin Luther King Jr is the most iconic civil rights leader in history. If anyone is unsure of his significance, they could simply take a trip to Washington, D.C to view his magnificent monument. Dr. King in the 1950s and 1960s, led protests and spoke on numerous occasions about injustice and segregation within the African American community. Although he had many Anti- Racism protest, his most legendary took place in Birmingham, Alabama. While in Birmingham, Dr. King was arrested which led to him writing a detailed letter to the city clerk.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on the 15th of January, 1929, and received the Nobel Peace prize in December 1964. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is known as the figurehead of the civil rights movement. In early April of 1963, Dr. King was arrested for participating in a march with no permit from the city officials in Birmingham, Alabama. Later, while he was in jail King wrote a letter in response to a letter in the local newspaper written by a couple of clergymen that had scorned his protests and marches because they believed that they were unwise and untimely. Within his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” he voices his reasons and ideas as to why he did what he did.

At this time Black people were in-equal to White people and Martin Luther King was affected by this in his day to day routines. An example of the unjustness that Black Americans faced was when they wanted to eat at a restaurant then they had to sit in a separate section of the restaurant, or even when they wanted to buy shoes they were served at the back of the store.

In 1963 MLK was arrested for protesting for equality for blacks in Birmingham. The government didn't like when black people protested against segregation. MLK was assassinated on April 4th, 1968 in a motel while walking to dinner. Many people did not like MLK for what he stood for and believed in. Unfortunately, he was assassinated.
