In the short story The Monkey's Paw, the outcome in the wishes that were made by Mr. and Mrs. White did not turn out the way that they wanted to them to. They had been warned by Sergeant- Major that they needed to be carefull with the wishes they make. The story portrays that it is important to be content with what we have. Just because we think we need or want something, we might have to consider what we need to do or what may happen in order to make it possible.
The Monkey's paw was face down in the fireplace which might have been the cause to the bad things that happened. An example of foreshadowing was shown when Sergeant-Major said ¨“Hold it up in your right hand, and state your wish out loud so that you can be heard, but I warn you of what might happen¨ (W.W. Jacobs 3). He already knew that the Monkeys paw brought bad luck and it was very important to be careful what was wished for. I think that Mr. White understood that it was important to wish for practical things so he told his wife, ¨If you must wish, wish for something sensible¨ (W.W. Jacobs 3). The Monkey's paw provided three wishes for whatever was wanted. The first wish was to have $200, Herbert told his mother, “If you only paid off the house, you’d be quite happy, wouldn’t you¨ (W.W. Jacobs 4)! Even though they did not really need the money, they still thought it would be a good idea to wish for the money. The White family thought it would be a great first wish so Mr White grabbed the monkey's paw and said ¨I wish for two hundred pounds¨ (W.W. Jacobs 4).The paw did grant the wish but the wish came true because of the death of the son.
